Dear Colleagues,
Sixty years ago, when SRI International was founded, there were many important opportunities that needed to be addressed in a world recovering from WWII. And on the West Coast of the United States, in a region of orchards and farms, the time was ripe for a research institute whose mission is scientific discovery and the application of science and technology for knowledge, commerce, prosperity, and peace. That region became Silicon Valley. The establishment of Stanford Research Institute on November 6, 1946 brought to fruition the efforts of Stanford University trustees and local business leaders after years of planning. In the 1940s, SRI investigated new plant sources for rubber, addressed economic development in the United States and Latin America, and sponsored the first national air pollution symposium. Now we are developing alternative energy sources, new cancer therapeutics, and ways to improve education. Over the decades, our wide-ranging projects have addressed important issues in health, the environment, information technology and communications, and security. Our longstanding multidisciplinary approach to solving problems has created new industries, billions of dollars in market value, and lasting benefits to society. SRI innovations touch our lives every day when we use the Internet, talk on a mobile phone, write a check, watch a movie, or mail a letter. Today’s world is also full of important needs that will be addressed through innovation: health, energy, environment, poverty, entertainment, community, and education. It is perhaps the richest time in the history of science and technology to make major contributions. Reaching our 60th anniversary this year is a milestone made possible through the support of our many clients, partners, and friends. SRI is deeply grateful to all of you throughout the public and private sectors for your support and collaboration. More than 25,000 staff members have worked at the institute since our founding. Their achievements never cease to amaze me—thank you. Together we remain committed to our founding purpose and to making a difference in the world. The future will be shaped by many things, but increasingly through research and innovation. SRI will continue to make positive contributions to improving the quality of life around the globe.
