Day in the Life @ SRI:
First, I check and respond to email and plan the day's work. The rest of the day is spent between the office and the lab. Remote access to the lab computer helps in running experiments and working on design, assembling and analyzing data, writing proposals, and exploring funding opportunities.
Before SRI:
Engineer, Nuclear Technology Division, Westinghouse Electric Corporation
Academics:
Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, Russia
Why SRI?
I view SRI as an organization of professional scientists. At SRI we stay focused on the results, which makes SRI efficient. To be competitive in bringing in new projects, we must be multidimensional researchers, which to me is more attractive than single-dimensional research and development.
Inspiration and Motivation:
Two projects that I am leading can make a real difference in the world. The direct carbon fuel cell may be a significant contributor to energy independence, and low-cost hydrogen generation could speed up transition to next-generation fuel.
Away from the Office:
Riding horses, hiking, camping, tennis, downhill skiing
Languages:
At home we speak Russian. I would like to learn Japanese and Italian just for fun.
Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
During my six years at SRI I have brought in several million dollars in research projects.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Each technology belongs to one of two groups: (1) people cannot live without it or (2) people can live without it. I prefer the first group, which is far more likely to lead to success.
SRI is a very prestigious research institute, so focus on breakthrough concepts that you are confident will work.
Do not avoid risk and responsibility. They are necessary conditions for getting work done.
Be a dreamer because "wisdom comes to us in dreams."
