Focus @ SRI:
Electroactive polymer artificial muscle (EPAM) and its applications

Title and Program:
Program Director, Mobile Robotics and Transducers. I mostly work from my home in Colorado and make lots of trips to SRI in Menlo Park and to see clients.

Day in the Life @ SRI:
Phone calls, proposal writing, and e-mail interspersed with experiments and brainstorming

Before SRI:
I was mostly a student. For a couple of years, I was a geophysicist at Shell Oil.

Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas (Austin)

Why SRI?
Because it is an exciting place to work on cutting-edge technology with great people

Inspiration and Motivation:
I am always encouraged by the thought that the next idea or experiment could be a breakthrough. Usually not—but it could be!

Away from the Office:
Not often! When I'm not at work (my office is in my home), I like to jog, fish, go to the movies, read books (mostly science fiction), and generally be a soccer dad with my 10-year-old son.

Languages:
English. I used to know Morse Code but I'm pretty rusty now.

Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
Artificial muscle, with applications such as robotics, acoustics, and power generation

Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Find the things that you are enthusiastic about—they are usually the things you are best at.

Favorites:
Jogging, good food, good company, and maybe a glass of wine—not necessarily in that order. I like movies (all types from the dumbest to the best) and science fiction.
