Meet Roger Sherman, Information Specialist, Information Technology Services, Archiving and Research (SRI Library)
Focus @ SRI:
Enhancing SRI's access to world-class information tools to enable research and marketing staff members to work more efficiently. Also, I work with the Tokyo office as a marketing liaison.
Day in the Life @ SRI:
My days are quite varied. I could be doing a complex database search on any of a wide range of topics; locating print materials in our collection; helping a user navigate an online database, find an e-journal, or resolve an access problem; assisting a researcher in formulating a search strategy for a current-awareness alert; updating library Web pages; evaluating and recommending new information resources; meeting with colleagues regarding library operations; or talking with vendors about their products.
For the Tokyo office, I might be updating our Japanese Web pages, researching a Japanese market topic, or assisting with communication with Menlo Park staff.
Before SRI:
Librarian at two Silicon Valley organizations: Signetics (now Philips Semiconductors) and the trade association Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). I taught English in Japan at Sony for three years following completion of my undergraduate degree.
Academics:
B.A., Linguistics, University of California, Davis
M.L.S., University of California, Los Angeles
Additional post-graduate work in Japanese studies, University of California, Berkeley.
Why SRI?
The amazing diversity of research programs providing solutions to many important world problems and creating a tangible impact. Never a dull moment here!
Inspiration and Motivation:
Knowing that, by connecting people to the information they need, I am contributing to the advancement of SRI's mission and learning a lot of fascinating things along the way.
Away from the Office:
Speaker-relations coordinator for a multilingual computing user group; travel (most recently Argentina, Japan, Italy and France); regular exercise (walking) while listening to audio books and lectures.
Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
Aside from developing a loyal clientele among staff over the years . . .
I recently negotiated an information service contract that expanded our coverage and saved well over $50,000 at the same time.
Languages:
I read Spanish, French, and Japanese and have done several Japanese-to-English translations at SRI over the last few years.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Nothing beats teamwork coupled with clear goal setting. And be sure to attend SRI's all-hands meetings, watering holes, and mixers to learn from your colleagues and develop new ideas.
