Meet Our People

SRI's innovative thinking depends directly on the people who work here. Meet members of our team in Computing and Engineering, Chemistry, Physics and Materials, Drug Discovery, Drug Development and HealthEconomics and Education, Environment and Energy, Business Development, and Administration and Corporate Activities, and learn why they joined SRI—you may discover that you would like to join the team, too. Visit Careers @ SRI for descriptions of current openings.

Meet L. Lynn Voss, Software Engineering Program Manager at SRI in Helena, Montana

[]

Focus @ SRI:
Improving R&D for software development processes across SRI and bridging software engineering gaps between SRI research and our customers

Day in the Life @ SRI:
I often spend much of my day keeping projects on track. I've been lucky to play a significant role on the DARPA-funded CALO (Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes) project for much of the last four years. Between the CALO project, leading the great team of software engineers here in Helena, and dealing with a few administrative issues in running a remote office, I stay very busy.

Before SRI:
I've really grown up at SRI. During my undergraduate studies prior to SRI, I worked a couple of years performing user interface development on the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) project through what is now Idaho National Laboratory.

Academics:
B.S.C.S. (summa cum laude), Montana State University-Bozeman
M.B.A., Technology Management, University of Phoenix Online

Why SRI?
The wonderful opportunities. Few other places have as many innovative projects continuously active or as many great people to work with.

Inspiration and Motivation:
My dad has always been a great motivator for me with his hard work ethic, running the family farm homesteaded by my great grandparents 100 years ago, while also teaching math and computers in high school. Dad is still there, though now I get much of my professional inspiration and motivation from my co-workers.

Away from the Office:
My family and church activities take most all my time. I get in a little boating, woodworking, and home improvement. In past lives, I played a lot of ball (particularly baseball) and enjoyed leather working. I last carved a pair of matching saddles.

Languages:
English

Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
I am quite proud of my role in the formation of Discern Communications, an SRI spin-off venture. I was able to help mature the SRI technology, hire and train the initial team, and deliver a system to Discern's first customer. I'm always proud of every chance to get in front of customers to demonstrate a solution that meets their needs.

Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Find time to occasionally sit back and reflect on the bigger picture no matter what your specific task may be. Also, spend some time to find out what everyone else at SRI is doing and how you might work together on future projects. There are a lot of incredible people here.
