National Center for Marine and Port Security Launches First Major Project

NCMPS logoSRI leads the National Center for Maritime and Port Security, which recently launched its first major project: a five-year, $36.5M contract from the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command to develop a Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) system that demonstrates advanced sensing and situation awareness technologies for improved U.S. port security.

Florida Congressman C.W. Bill Young, representative of the 10th Congressional District and the senior Republican in the House of Representatives, announced the contract at a press conference on October 26.

The National Center for Maritime and Port Security, based in SRI's St. Petersburg facility, has a mission to help the U.S. understand the global maritime elements that could impact the nation's security, safety, economy, or environment. The Center's work spans research, technology development, systems integration, testing, demonstrations, deployments, evaluations, policy, and training.

Event Marks 30th Anniversary of an Internet Milestone
Internet Pioneers1977 marked a critical milestone in the development of the Internet and wireless networking. While many people trace the Internet's origins to the ARPANET of the late 1960s, the word "internet" means joining different kinds of individual networks together. Internetworking made its formal debut with the first connection across three dissimilar networks in 1977. SRI and its packet radio network, which was located in a panel van that drove the highways of the San Francisco Bay Area, played a major role.

On November 7, the Computer History Museum and the Web History Center presented a celebration of this historic demonstration. A panel led by Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn, who oversaw the project for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), featured recollections from industry pioneers who participated in the 1977 event.
