Twins Aged 17 and Under
The Center for Health Sciences' Twins Studies Program maintains
the Northern California Twin Registry,
which currently has approximately 2,000 twin registrants. Registered
twins are periodically asked to participate in health and behavioral
studies conducted by SRI researchers.
In October 2001, the registry was expanded to include youths aged
17 and younger. Parents of twins aged 8-17 can call 1-800-SRI-TWIN (1-800-774-8946) to register their twins.
The Twins Studies Program staff worked with SRI Corporate and Marketing
Communications to assist with outreach efforts to parents of twins,
to encourage them to sign up for the registry. Part of the outreach
involved publicity efforts with the media.
SRI Corporate and Marketing Communications helped the Twins Studies
Program with its outreach to parents of twin youths in two ways:
- Created a newspaper advertisement and placed it in a variety of Bay Area publications (The San
Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, Bay Area Parent Magazine, and
Metro). To date, more than 130 pairs of twin youths have been registered, due in large part to this
outreach. See the ad below.

- Brainstormed creative ways to extend outreach into communities with large ethnic minority
segments, to help find more twins in these minorities. This process is ongoing.
